The Departmental Trap

Many organizations are caught in the departmental trap.  When an innovation effort starts and you hear "we need someone from Marketing on the team"  or "we need someone from Operations", you probably are caught in the departmental trap.  Results are not optimal when people or organizations are caught in the departmental trap. 

Departments don't innovate

Departmental thinking almost never selects the best person for a team.  This is because every innovation effort is different, just as every person is different. Often each department gets to send one person to an effort. People using departmental thinking often send "the innovation guy or gal" to a team effort.  Sometimes it can be the same person every time.  Without a way to determine who will be best on the specific innovation team, failure or limited success is almost guaranteed. 

Innovation is like a horse race

It's actually easier to pick which horse will be best at a specific race than it is to pick the best person for an innovation effort.  We all know not all horses are race horses.  Some horses are best at pulling heavy wagons.  Some are best at giving children rides.  Not even all race horses are good at every race.  Some horses are best at quarter mile races.  Some horses are best at mile races.  Some run best on dirt tracks and others run best on turf or grass.
